Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:31-32
Jesus is speaking directly to those who believe in Him. He is not speaking to the world He is speaking to those who believe He is who He says He is. He is calling them to something deeper than believing He is the One sent by God. He is calling believers to live in His word until they experience the truth firsthand and this participation in the truth of His word will set them free.
Believers will go to heaven if they have placed their trust in Him to save them. Believers can be trapped in delusions of sinfulness if they do not live in the truth of His word. Our enemy has been practicing to ensnare us for at least 7,000 years. He is faster, smarter, and stronger than us; plus he is invisible. We will never be able to compete with him in our 70-80 year life span. Our only hope is to follow the truth laid out for us in scripture. The Ancient of Days who has been around longer than our enemy, is stronger, faster, and smarter than him, and can see him can tell us how to defeat the enemy of our soul. Obeying Him is the only path to freedom.
If we want to move from being believers into the deeper relationship of disciples we will have to actually practice Jesus’ teaching. Practicing discipleship is the way we achieve release from the slavery the enemy plans to trap us in. Dear brothers and sisters let us trust in Jesus to the point that we can obey Him. It is the only way for us to be happy and free before Heaven.
