But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
2 Peter 3:10-12
2 Peter 3:10-12
In these days of increasing turmoil it is good to comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:18) We know that all the losses we suffer here will be taken care of when Jesus returns. I am blessed by this hope on a nearly daily basis. I am counting on Jesus saving me.
While these words are a great comfort, they should also be a great motivation. Peter by The Holy Spirit asks us, what kind of people should we be in light of the temporary existence of the world we live in? The fact that Jesus is coming back to end the world is not a license to be lazy in our witness, lifestyle or character. Peter even implies that our looking towards Jesus and living righteously hastens His return. That agrees with what Jesus said about not returning until the whole world hears the gospel. It is a wonderful mystery that somehow we are participating in the return of Christ.
We also should be motivated to show Jesus to others because we know everything will be destroyed so suddenly and thoroughly. We should love our neighbors enough to warn them of the impending disaster coming upon the world. We NEED to share our faith.
Resting in His Labor,
Pastor Jason
