For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.”
2 Peter 2:18-22
Peter has already addressed the doom and depravity of false teachers in this chapter now he turns to their deception. They use great oratorical skills to promote their empty ideas. They say things that don’t mean anything so that people can use those words to mean what they need them to. That way their followers can stay loyal to them when things don’t make sense. These empty words do not build spiritual strength. They twist truth so that the lust inside of the followers is fanned into flame and bring them into perversions that lure them back into the traps of sin that Jesus has set them free from.
These false teachers promise freedom even though they, themselves are trapped in sin. If they being slaves enslave others then those who are enslaved are under their control. If we escape the filth of this world by receiving Christ and then are snared in pervasive sin because of some false teaching that promotes license as liberty we are in worse shape than those who are newly saved. It would have been better for us not to have been taught the right way. At least they wouldn’t know deep inside that they are eating vomit and wallowing in the mud.
Dear brothers and sisters don’t eat the regurgitated bile of life. Eat the meat of the word that is served to those who are full grown and can tell the difference between good and evil because they have practiced godliness so they know haw to tell the difference between good and evil. Don’t go back to the mire of the pig pen since you have been washed and set free. Stay clean. Jesus did not cleanse us and set us free so that we could return to the confines of our old lives and wallow in our old filth. He did not prepare a banqueting table so that we could eat the refuse of our prior sin-sick lives.
