A New High Priest -- July 11, 2009

For if He were on earth, He would not be priest, since there are priest who offer the gifts according to the law, who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all the things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
Hebrews 8:4-5

Jesus could not be a priest on earth under the old covenant because He was from the line of Judah, not from the Aaronic branch of the Levitical line. Only as Jesus moved beyond the shadow tabernacle does He become the High Priest of the New Covenant.

The pattern that Moses was shown is open to all because it is recorded in scriptures for us. All of the furniture but the lampstand (representing the illumination of the Holy Spirit) are made of wood and overlaid with gold. This represents the Incarnation. Man and God brought together to bridge the gap between us. Because of this joining we know that worship must encompass the totality of our lives.

Our worship must involve the seen and unseen aspect of ourselves and our world. Worship includes sacrifice (the brazen altar), cleansing (the bronze laver), knowing Him (showbread), seeing Him (the lampstand), serving Him (the table of incense), and having intimacy with Him (the Ark). Having intimacy with Jesus all stems from what the items under the mercy seat symbolize in our lives. In His mercy Jesus has given us power to live our lives (the rod of Aaron), purpose for our lives (the law) and provision for our lives (the manna). With all of these spiritual blessings we are freed from sin and its consequences so we can focus on letting Jesus transform us into His image.

At The Mercy Seat,

Pastor Jason
