He Knew -- July 31, 2009

But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for He knew all men. He did not need man's testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man.
John 2:24-25 NIV

Jesus trusted His disciples and loved ones. However He didn't entrust Himself to them. That is He wasn't counting on them to carry Him to the end. He knew they would fail Him. He knew they would betray Him, deny Him and run away when He needed them. He had already experienced their failures when John and James wanted to call fire down on the Samaritans; when the disciples didn't get the lesson about the leaven of the Pharisees; and when His inner circle slept while He prayed. Then one of the inner circle sold Him out, most of His men ran away and finally one who swore to defend Him to death denied.

It is important for us to trust each other to do our part without counting on anyone but Jesus to carry us to the end of the age. Like the song says, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus and His righteousness". Like Jesus we will be disappointed by even our closest friends. Like Him we should commit ourselves to our Father.

Trust in the Lord for security. Trust the family to be human. Divinely enabled? Yes. Divine? No. Jesus is the only One who is able to meet our needs fully. He does that through our brothers and sisters collectively not any individual. We are counting on Christ and His body not one of our brothers or sisters.

Trusting Him,

Pastor Jason
