Putting Off Sin -- June 17, 2009

But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.
Colossians 3:8

Clearly it is our responsibility to stop sinning. We are to move away from habits that are ungodly and by default unhealthy. Even habits of certain emotional content are subject to us. We are to put off anger as a way of life. We know that we can be angry under the right conditions and still be righteous as long as we don’t sin while we are angry. But, according to this passage we aren’t to have a lifestyle of anger. Not only are we to put off personality sins but we are to put off mundane sin like swearing. I know this isn’t an exhaustive list because the apostle could have included lust, covetousness, theft and/or slander. Since my salvation I have struggled with many on this list and am finding some success in putting off these immaturity markers.

But now I am to put these off. First I must recognize them. Next I must get deliverance from Jesus. Finally I have to cut off the habitual end of things myself. According to verse 9 this will take the church being honest with each other about sin issues. Once we get this put off we will be able to put on Christ-like things.

Putting It All Off,

Pastor Jason
