Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people. So he put in the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped.
Numbers 16:47-48NKJV
Numbers 16:47-48NKJV
In this dramatic scene we see Aaron interceding for the very people who had rejected the Lord and him. After Korah and company had challenged Moses' leadership the Lord authenticated Moses as the leader by opening the ground around Korah's group to show how He felt about their rebellion. How did the people respond? They were angry with Moses. They accused him of killing Korah's crew. They assembled against Moses and Aaron.
God's response was a physical manifestation of the cloud over the tabernacle and a plague against the people. He told Moses to get out of the way so He could "consume them in a moment." God had had enough. He wasn't getting through to this people group. They were still too encultureated with their slavery and wordly standards from their stay in Egypt.
Fortunately, Moses was their leader. His response was compassion. He fell on his face and prayed for them. Then he sent Aaron to bring an offering of incense between them and God. So dramatic was this salvation that Scripture reports, "And he stood between the dead and the living..." What a clear picture of God the Father sending Jesus to stop the plague of sin upon mankind. Jesus died for the very ones who were killing Him--namely us. Then His word says, "...so the plague was stopped."
Our response is to be like Christ's, like Aaron's. We are the priests of the New Covenant. We stand between those who have rejected Christ and Christ. We stand between the living and the dead. We pray for God's mercy upon them. We ask that God not consume them but give them time to come around.
