The God Who Listens -- January 2, 2009

Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.
Luke 2:46-47

The answers Jesus gives to life’s questions are astonishing. His understanding is far above ours. It is no surprise that the Ancient of Days has answers for our lives. After all, He is the Creator of all that exists besides Himself; the things that are seen and the things that are unseen. He SHOULD have all the answers.

More astonishing is that Jesus sat in the midst of teachers as a twelve year old listening to them and asking questions. Most of us are not particularly good listeners, but here we have the Savior as a preteen carefully attending to their teachings. He even asked them questions. Jesus is the same with us today.

Jesus is still carrying on conversations with us. He isn’t merely ordering us about without any interest in our perspective. Surely no one would say Jesus is unjustified/unqualified to command us how to live – He has done exactly that in Scripture – or that He doesn’t have the right to put demands upon us. However, our Lord has a greater interest than producing drones that carry out His will. He is developing sons & daughters born again into His family; raising them to stations of responsibility in His Kingdom.

We should listen to all that Jesus has to tell us. He honors us by listening to what we need to say to Him. So, go ahead and tell Him what is in your heart. Answer His questions honestly and get ready to be astonished by His answers.

Sitting With Him,

Pastor Jason
