Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Luke 12:32
Luke 12:32
There is no need for the fearful, foolish clutching of material goods. Jesus had just finished telling the parable of the rich man who planned to rebuild his barns to hold his over abundance for his future retirement. He was planning for years of celebrating. Yet God required his judgment before his plans had the chance to finalize. Jesus explained the point was where one’s heart was not how much wealth you accumulated. Then Jesus warned of the covetousness of the poor; always seeking to satisfy some felt need in their life. When He had finished His warning, He encouraged us not to be afraid.
I am greatly encouraged by Jesus referring to us as His “little flock”. That reference recognizes the difficulties of being a Christian in this world. We are small in numbers and in resources. We are not the predators. “Little flock” also lets us know that we have an intimate relationship with the Father.
The Good Shepherd closely watches us. We are His focus. As the “little flock”, He knows each of us personally. Because we know Him and have His teaching there is no need for covetousness that leads to hording goods to protect our pleasure or for the grasping after material things to satisfy the base needs of life. Since the Father is pleased to give us the kingdom, we can fearlessly face the future. Our confidence is in Him. That confidence gives great peace.
From The Flock,
Pastor Jason
