Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
Luke 24:31-32
Luke 24:31-32
We are like the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We are foolish and slow to believe. We can’t figure out why we have difficulties in our lives when the Messiah Himself had to suffer and to enter glory. We want to enter glory without any suffering in our lives. These fellow followers couldn’t figure out what had gone wrong with Jesus plan when they were right in the middle of them. It was in this dark time they finally realized who Jesus was.
It is in our dark times that Jesus comes and opens the Scriptures to us so that our hearts burn while He “talks” with us. When things are rolling along according to “plan” (ours not His) and what Jesus is doing coincidently lines up with our program we are confident. But when things turn aside to deal with the reality of our sin and brokenness we wonder why God has allowed terrible things to happen in the world.
Jesus explained the Messiah’s mission to them yet it was not until He fellowshipped with them that their eyes were opened so they could “know” Him and clarify what the “burning” in their hearts signified. We need Jesus to open the Scriptures to us and to open our eyes to Him so our hearts may burn with truth’s passion.
On The Road With Him,
Pastor Jason
