Self Deceit -- July 17, 2009

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
James 1:21-22

James wants us to know receiving God's word in meekness includes laying aside the filthiness and wicked that flows out of our souls onto those around us. It is this implanted word that is able to save our souls. It can only save us in the areas applied. God’s Word is the source for living, the standard of holiness, and the strength of the human spirit as truth. This Book is breathed by the Holy Spirit. It is our fortress our defense, the food for our spiritual sustenance, and the weapon which is effective against the enemy. Too much cannot be said about God’s Word, but too little can be done.

Only by feeding daily and receiving in humility what the Word says about me, does this divine masterpiece, The Bible, work in me. The Pharisees of Jesus’ time were experts in knowing the Word but failures in receiving it. They knew what it said but didn’t apply it. Make plans to be in His Word. Make sure the Word gets in you by doing it. The text goes on to say that reading God's Word without doing it is like looking in the mirror at your dirty face and not washing it. We are just playing at church instead of becoming more like Jesus. Scripture can save us from confusion, error, and failure just as surely as its truth saves our eternal souls, but it depends on our reception and application to our very selves.
Don't be deceived! Do the Word!
