And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Philippians 1:9-11
What a great prayer! Love, understanding and discernment for the gaining of things of excellence in our lives so that we can be sincere and blameless as we wait on Christ, filling ourselves product of our righteousness by following Jesus which brings glory to our God. Paul’s prayer for us is a good model for us to follow.
Often love is used as an excuse for doing unwise things. Here Paul asks for them to go hand in hand. True, godly love does the right thing based in understanding the need of others. It is not a sentimental mish-mash. Real love does what is best for others even when it means they don’t appreciate it; even if we are misunderstood. Discerning love goes even further, attempting to do the right thing without offense.
When we combine these three powerful attributes of God in our Spirit we become very effective ministers bringing Him glory and praise. Once others see that our motivation is love, that we are equipped by God’s word (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and that His Spirit in us gives us the ability to apply it with excellence, they will receive our ministry with gladness and will give God the glory with their words and lives. All of this is only possible as we are led by Christ through His Spirit. To God be the glory for the great things He has done.
Growing In Love That Discerns,
Pastor Jason
