Clear And Present -- June 23, 2009

Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.
1 Timothy 5:24-25

All men sin. The sins of some are obvious while others take awhile to manifest. This is important to remember when we deal with each other. It is especially true when considering giving someone a place of leadership in the local church. What are their sins? We know they have some. What kind are they? While all sin interferes with the openness of our relationship with our Father some interfere more with our ability to represent Him faithfully in service to others. Some even make it impossible for that person to hold a place of leadership. That does not mean they cannot minister to others in other areas.

It is also true that the good works of people will come to light. Some people have good works that are easy to see; some are harder to recognize. They are quiet good works. Given enough time these good works will be found out. All the good we do will be revealed over time in our lives.

We can’t be too quick to assess people. Some come with their flaws forward. They may seem to be unqualified to minister to us and others but their good works will be revealed in time. Conversely some people come in like they are in good shape only to let us down later. I think we have to be sure not to be casual about our opinion on individual. All people have sins, even Christians. All people help others, even non-Christians. We can’t write people off because of a bad first impression. We can’t lift them to places of honor because of their charm or pleasant personality. Let’s balance how we look at our brothers and sisters so we can see them God’s way.

See You His Way,

Pastor Jason
