19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21
Matthew 6:19-21
Jesus was telling us throughout this chapter to make sure that our motivations are heavenly, not earthly. He says we are not to do our good deeds before men. We are to be careful that our prayer life stays personal and not become some kind of show for those around us. We are to be forgiving like God. Even spiritual things like fasting can become performances for everyone but God if we are not careful. In these three verses Jesus give us the means to accomplish motivating ourselves rightly.
We need to invest in heaven. Our treasure guides our heart. Wherever we invest we will be aware of what is going on there. We will watch to see if our investment grows. We will talk about our hopes for our investment. That is why investing heaven is so important. It is the only safe bet. All other places of investment are risky. Their return is only temporary. Those earthly things we have invested in will fail. Eventually they will be stolen, eaten, or decayed. The things we have invested in heaven are secure. They cannot be lost or stolen.
Jesus, help me invest in your kingdom so that my reward will be secure and so that I can become like you. Please let my sacrifice be enough to lock my heart in with you.
Treasuring Him,
Pastor Jason
