Healthy People/Churches -- April 8, 2009

But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also.
2 Corinthians 8:7

Paul is asking for an offering for the needy Christians outside of the area the Corinthians live in. He challenges them to excel in their giving just as they do in all of the other ministries in which they participate. Today many believers in Christ stop short of full discipleship. Daily devotions aren’t their thing so they mess around with reading the Bible. Doctrine is ‘boring’ so they are happy just knowing Jesus. Their week is full so they skip the assembly missing worship and encouragement. They love the social aspect of fellowship but not the accountability of deep personal relationships. They also perceive financial issues separately from fellowship. Tithing and offering to God is a point of fellowship even more than it is a point of stewardship.

When someone commits their financial life to God’s people, they have truly entered into membership. Whether they ‘officially’ sign up or not they are invested in their local fellowship in a way that no other ministry affords. A tither is someone who understands not only that God honors those who obey Him, but is someone who recognizes themselves as a part of the group. They are sharing in the practical aspects of life together. Giving is no less or more important than any other aspect of discipleship. Like all the others, it is essential.

Let me list the aspects of a disciple’s life:

A. Disciples have daily time Jesus (Bible reading, prayer and worship.)
B. Disciples fellowship regularly (assembling for relationships that bring accountability and identification with that group along with regular giving.)
C. Disciples share their faith with those outside as lead by the Lord.

Healthy churches do the same as they reflect the corporate life of the believers in them.

A. They have regular times with the Father that include Bible reading, prayer, and worship
B. The give opportunity for ministry that encourages relationships.
C. They share in community to bring others to Jesus and their group.

If we can be disciples as members and individuals, intimacy with each other and God will balance the holiness of discipline. This allows powerful, authentic outward sharing of our faith that effectively touches our world.

Touching Him to know you and reach others,

Pastor Jason
