Donkey Control -- March 4, 2009

and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it.
Mark 11:2 NKJV

Jesus rode an unbroken donkey colt into Jerusalem to show His authority over the “flesh”. He showed not only His peaceful intent; He showed His ability to rule of the untamed part of our person. He doesn’t just mean well, He is able to perform what He has promised. He rode the colt no one else had.

How many times has your “flesh” ran away with you? The wild urges that cause us to respond too sharply to others. Maybe we stayed up to late and were poor workers. Maybe we overate and felt guilty. Possibly, we lied to our spouse, kids or parents. Then there is always the TV to feed our carnal nature in the privacy of our own home. The “flesh” is untamable. It will always be wild. It is at enmity with Jesus. It wars against God’s Spirit in us. Just when you think you have it under control the “flesh” lets you know it is still there and that you can never let your guard down.

We can’t suppress our carnal desires for very long at a time but we can let Jesus “ride” them. He can turn them into vehicles that carry Him in triumph just as He did that Sunday long ago. In our own strength we can’t beat our ingrained tendencies. But in Jesus’ strength we can more than overcome them. We need to stop trying wrestling ourselves in our own strength and start relying on the strength of Jesus to gain mastery over our nature.

That is part of the good news. Jesus has made us more than conquerors. He has given us the weapons to tear down the strongholds in our minds and hearts that rise up against Him as Lord. Our minds can be renewed in Him. We are not stuck with all of the brokenness of our hearts until heaven. We can begin healing now. We can became like Jesus and be agents of healing ourselves. We can begin His glorification now!

Putting Him In Charge,

Pastor Jason
