Bless My People -- February 19, 2009

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:

“The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” ’

“So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”
Numbers 6:22-27

The Lord conferred a great honor on the priest by giving them this blessing to put upon His people. He directly put the words in their mouth so that it was not theirs but stewarded by them. This ensured the potency of the blessing. Though men bestowed it it was from God. A few things pop out at me when I read the blessing.

Yahweh (LORD), God’s personal name, is used three times, which reminds me of the trinity. The blessing progresses through the Godhead. Jesus blesses us by keeping us; He is our savior. The Holy Spirit is God’s grace living in us. In the end, it is the Father who looks upon us with favor and gives us peace.

It is a Hebrew poem made up of three lines. Each line is made up of two parts and the second defines what the first means. The Lord blessing include the whole benefit package listed throughout scripture, but especially salvation in keeping us. God looks upon us with favor but certainly, in His grace He confers on us the things we don’t deserve, most notably His Presence in the person of His Spirit. Our Father pays attention to us watching for our “shalom”, his all-encompassing program of well-being.

The blessing is in His name. The priests were to put His name on His people to confer the blessing. The way to bless them was to make sure that the name of the Lord was on them. The name of Jesus is still our blessing today. It is in His name that we pray. It is in His name that we live. Our blessing is completely in Jesus.

As God’s people, it is our passion to live in His blessing. As priests in the kingdom, it is our prerogative to confer this same blessing on our brothers and sisters around us. In a world that takes His name in vain, it is our privilege to lift the blessing of His name on us for all to see.

Blessed in His Name,

Pastor Jason
