Spirit of Strut -- January 28, 2009

The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.
Psalm 12:8

We see this spirit of strut everywhere in our world. The teenage strut, the criminal strut, the sports star strut, the religious strut and an endless variety of strut styles are displayed in our world. The strut can only happen when values are wrong. When we honor what is vile we are asking for those who are wicked to strut right our front and take the lead in our society.

We are agents of resistance and change in this culture of strut. First of all let’s take stock of ourselves. Are we strutting? There is no room for us to strut in the kingdom of God because it all belongs to Him. It is all based on Him. Next let’s not reward skewed values with positive attention. Then we won’t embolden our children to be arrogant and narcissistic. We can be most effective at this in our own homes. Working with our children to help them properly and honestly interpret their place in the world gives them the best hope for success and happiness in the long-run. Our children are really the weapons we strike against the enemy with. Psalm 127 teaches us that our children are arrows in our hands to launch into the world. They go places we never can and in ways we can’t imagine! Where are you aiming your kid?

We can expect great things when we walk humbly before God. Peter teaches us that those who humble (correctly assess) themselves will be lifted up as an example for others by God. We can never strut our way to God’s exaltation. We trust Him to place us where we are most useful when we are ready for it. Only He can know what will be good for us and those we are associated with. Luke’s quote of Paul’s teaching in Acts tells us that God has positioned us in the best place for our salvation and success in Him.

Stopping the Strut,

Pastor Jason
